Identifying the Environment and Redshift of GRB Afterglows from the Time-Dependence of Their Absorption Spectra

چکیده
The discovery of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows revealed a new class of variable sources at optical and radio wavelengths. At present, the environment and precise redshift of the detected afterglows are still unknown. We show that if a GRB source resides in a compact (∼< 100 pc) gas-rich environment, the afterglow spectrum will show time-dependent absorption features due to the gradual ionization of the surrounding medium by the afterglow radiation. Detection of this time-dependence can be used to constrain the size and density of the surrounding gaseous system. For example, the MgII absorption line detected in GRB970508 should have weakened considerably during the first month if the absorption occurred in a gas cloud of size ∼< 100 pc around the source. The time-dependent HI or metal absorption features provide a precise determination of the GRB redshift. Subject headings: cosmology: theory – gamma rays: bursts

There is increasingly strong evidence that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are associated with star-forming galaxies, and occur near or in the star-forming regions of these galaxies. These associations provide indirect evidence that at least the long GRBs detected by BeppoSAX are a result of the collapse of massive stars. The recent evidence that the light curves and the spectra of the afterglows of GR...

The spectrum of its X-ray afterglow exhibited several emission lin...

The similarity of the absorption spectra of gamma-ray burst (GRB) sources or afterglows with the absorption spectra of quasars (QSOs) suggests that QSOs and GRB sources are very closely related. Since most people believe that the redshifts of QSOs are of cosmological origin, it is natural to assume that GRBs or their afterglows also have cosmological redshifts. For some years a few of us have a...

GRBs are promising tools for tracing the formation of high redshift stars, including the first generation. At very high redshifts the bright reverse shock emission last longer in the observer frame, and its importance for detection and analysis purposes relative to the forward shock increases. We consider two different models for the GRB environment, based on current ideas about the redshift de...
متن کاملA systematic analysis of X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray burst observed by XMM-Newton
This work is part of a systematic re-analysis program of all the data of GammaRay Burst (GRB) X-ray afterglows observed so far, in order to constrain the GRB models. We present here a systematic analysis of those afterglows observed by XMMNewton between January 2000 and March 2004. This dataset includes GRB 011211 and GRB 030329. We have obtained spectra, light curves and colors for these after...
